Mary Baker Eddy presented her faithful student, John Salchow, with a beautiful scarfpin consisting of a large pearl with a delicate serpent of gold circling around the under side of the pearl. In the head of the serpent is a small diamond. In presenting this, Mrs. Eddy unfolded its symbolism as follows: “Truth is the pearl of great price. Grasp it with selfishness and it has a serpent under it — you may get bitten. But if you handle the serpent with unselfishness and clasp Truth gently — it has a diamond in its head.”  Mary Baker Eddy
