They certainly were not asleep in the common meaning of that term ; but were undergoing that spiritual transformation which must come to every one passing out of darkness into light. There must have been such a stirring up of ” the old man ” in them, that they were completely overpowered by it. All the errors of their past lives were coming to the surface : so that the lusts of the fleshly nature were beginning vividly to show themselves to their awakened sense.
