           Truth and reality are found only in God and His idea. Mate­rial man and all material things are but mortality, and without life in themselves. They are the semblance merely of the true idea of God. They are animate only through reflected Life, through or by the eternal spiritual Life; like shadows they only have motion, action, volition, in answer to the volition of their Principle, which is the idea of God whose substance is God. Thus the human body, mortal matter, is nothing, the very essence of nothing. It has neither life, substance nor intelligence. Sub­stance is without change and decay.             God is Principle, Soul, Spirit, Life, intelligence, harmony. There is no other life or intelligence, and no harmony from any other source. No discord or harmony emanates therefrom, or exists therein, or thereby. Immortal man is of God, Soul, of immortality, and not of mortality, nor of mortal man. He is spiritual and in the likeness of God, yea, Godlike, and — embracing the eternal existence, or spirituality of all existence, of all God’s crea­tion — is the idea of God, the shadow, the image, the reflection, the sign that points to God.   Mary Baker Eddy   (Carpenter, Gilbert, Essays on Christian Science, p.75)

As an illustration of her consistency, consider what she once said to Adam H. Dickey, “What is a good dinner or a good meal?  Good devil. What is a good night’s sleep?  Good evil.  What is a nice new dress?  Good evil.  What is a sense of health in matter?  Good evil.  Which is nearer God, a human sense of health or of sickness?  What is it that brings us into a realization of true being?  Spiritual understanding.  Then how do I heal?  By knowing the omnipotent, ever-present, eternal and infinite Mind is All– and, therefore, there is no inaction, over-action, diseased action or reaction.  Spiritual understanding – a knowledge of God – makes perfect.”  Mary Baker Eddy   (Carpenter, Jr., Gilbert, 500 Watching Points, #243)

The difficulty to understand science is, personal sense comprehends it not, that wars against it, for belief will not and cannot accept a Principle understandingly.  (Eddy, Mary Baker, Science and Health, 1st ed., p.199)
